A Morning at Earthen Roastery

The morning is still dark.
Quiet rests heavily outside.
Before the rooster crows, I am awake.

Today holds joy — fresh air, decisions, smells, and tastes.
Home, movement, the rhythm of exercise, and then the familiar drive to the Earthen factory.

Before light.

Like a gleaming gladiator, my friend and beloved roaster, Kairos, greets me. A second heartbeat. In my chest I feel the rhythm — the echo of the coffee drum. I appreciate the sound, the cadence. It feels as though I have waited years for this synchronicity.

Before light, Kairos comes to life.

The buzzer confirms she is on.
Gas valve open.
The cast-iron drum hums and rolls into rotation.
Air pressure breathes her presence into the room.

Click.
The igniter fires — pilot flame takes, then goes out.

Eyes pressed to the glass. Breath held. A prayer.

Click.
The igniter fires again.
The pilot flame takes.
The burner spreads flame.

Gratitude.

Kairos is warming up.

I check the roast sheet. Listen. Feel the space. What is the moisture in the roastery today? How cold or warm is the air? How much energy will it require to connect with this green coffee — to become one with it?

The roaster is no longer quiet.
She breathes heat, demanding attention.

Elated. Grateful. One with machine.

The day opens to the privilege of being an Earthen coffee roaster.

Now the focus shifts to what the farmer and nature have cultivated over a year of meticulous care. Moisture readings of the green coffee. Processing methods — washed or sundried. Flavor notes. Lot numbers. Where it was grown. At what altitude. How it was transported. How it was stored.

Like a deer drawn to water, I seek connection — how to bring out the best in the offering.

One hand rests on the warm wall of the roaster.
The other holds a green bean.

Its weight.
Its density.
Its moisture.
Its scent.

Immersed.

The roast curve is selected. Green beans wait in the hopper. Charge temperature reached. The coffee releases into the drum.

Woosh.
Woosh.

Beans tumble and rotate against cast iron. Air pressure and temperature are reduced on introduction — respect. Fragile. Nurture. Protect. Gradually, heat increases to gently kiss the coffee.

Energy builds.

A striving for perfection — unity between coffee, man, and machine. Not domination, but partnership. Respect in every roast.

The day continues with the opening and weighing of hessian bags from farmers across the world — each origin carrying its own story, its own season, its own hands.

Recently, the Aurora International Taste Challenge awarded Earthen’s coffees:
Central received a Silver and Revere a Gold.

A nod from expert judges — but more importantly, a reflection of care.

Central is a blend of the finest Central American coffees. A juicy tickle of cleanly fermented fruit, finished with toffee sweetness. Medium roasted. Welcoming and versatile — whether enjoyed as espresso, pour-over, or cappuccino.

Revere is a three-origin blend with syrup-like richness and full body. Intense and complex, bold and woody, with an earthy depth and rustic sweetness. The aroma carries distinct herbal and spicy undertones.

For us, the medals are secondary.

The real reward is hearing the coffee tell its story — through aroma, clarity, and balance — and knowing that every batch reaching you meets an exceptional standard.

Aurora recognition is encouraging.
But the true reward is when you take that first sip…
Pause…
And feel the care behind every offering come through.

That moment —
That connection —
Is why we are so privileged to roast.
